Hello and welcome to the April Design Challenge, formerly Pinterest Challenge, hosted by Cindy of County Road 407. Each month one inspiration photo is chosen and each of the participating bloggers use that photo to recreate something similar, but in their own personal style.

If you are visiting from my friend Carol’s blog, Blue Sky At Home, welcome! I am so glad you’re here! Don’t you just love her beautiful spring front door vignette?

Our Inspiration

This month our beautiful inspiration photo comes from Debra at Common Ground. What a lovely, cozy, and welcoming porch display! I just love how Debra uses her beautiful vintage treasures to showcase her plants outside her home, creating a warm and inviting space.

I was inspired by Debra to pair some beautiful annuals with some of my own vintage treasures to create a simple centerpiece.

How to Use a Soup Tureen to Create a Simple, Cozy Centerpiece with Annuals

Repurposing vintage pieces can add charm to everyday decorating, especially when they are filled with fresh, seasonal blooms. A soup tureen might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of floral styling, but it makes the most beautiful and unexpected centerpiece.

When filled with soft, colorful annuals, it instantly creates a look that feels fresh, relaxed, and wonderfully cozy.

Why Use a Soup Tureen?

A soup tureen brings classic character and makes a beautiful vessel for a floral arrangement that feels a little more gathered and less formal. Paired with simple annuals, it creates that effortless just picked from the garden look that’s perfect for spring and summer.

I was gifted this soup tureen by my local Buy Nothing group. Buy Nothing is a wonderful community Facebook site where local neighbors give and receive, share, and lend. It’s so true that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! I have both given and received gifts over the past couple of years.

Choose Your Annuals

One of the best parts of this centerpiece is how easy it is to customize. You can pick up a few small annuals from your local garden center. I like to use the thriller, filler, and spiller method when planting, just like I did in my Sensational Flower Garden Container.

Some beautiful options include:

  • Geraniums for a full, classic look
  • Dailias or Gerbera daisies for bold color
  • Impatiens for adding soft color in lower-light areas
  • Pansies for vibrant color and texture
  • Petunias for soft, trailing color
  • Torenia, Lobelia, or sweet potato vine for adding a cascading effect

For my centerpiece, I chose a deep magenta colored Dahlia as my thriller, some bright yellow pansies as my filler and a midnight blue Torenia as my spiller. These are all flowers that I can plant outside later in the season.

How to Arrange The Flowers

There are two simple ways to create your centerpiece:

Option 1: Keep Plants in Their Pots: (This is what I did.)

Place the annuals, while still in their pots, directly inside the soup tureen. Tuck some paper around the pots to fill in the gaps and keep everything in place. If necessary, add a bit of moss. This is the easiest and most flexible option.

Option 2: Plant Directly in the Tureen

If you would like a centerpiece that is more permanent, you can plant the annuals directly into the tureen. This creates a more cohesive, fuller look, like a mini garden. To complete this option:

  • Add a layer of pea gravel or small stones at the bottom for drainage.
  • Use potting soil and plant your plants directly into the tureen.
  • Be mindful when watering.

Add a Cozy Base and Simple Accents

To make your simple centerpiece feel more inviting, add a base. Place your tureen on a wooden board, a tray, a soft linen runner, or a pretty table cloth. These layers will add warmth and coziness.

Keep the styling around your soup tureen centerpiece minimal, so the flowers can be the focus. A few simple touches, like a the soft glow of a candle or folded linen napkin, can go a long way. The goal is to look collected and cozy, not overly styled.

Shop the Look

One of the things I love most about using annuals is how easy it is to change things up. You can swap out plants as the seasons change or move the plants outside as needed.

This simple, cozy soup tureen centerpiece is such a simple, no-fuss way to bring the outdoors in. It’s simple, affordable, and full of charm – perfect for creating a cozy, centerpiece that feels both fresh and timeless. Would you try this in your home?

  1. Lynne, a soup tureen is a perfect container for spring plants! I used one as a centerpiece, but with faux plants. Your choice of plants is great for the color combination, and that you can just plant them outside when they outgrow the tureen. You created a wonderful setting on your table and gave clear, helpful instructions.

Wow Lynne, your soup tureen arrangement is gorgeous! You have motivated me to get my one and only soup tureen out and create a centerpiece too. Excellent choices for your flower combination! Pinning!

  3. Your tureen looks lovely! I’ve used lots of other vessels but never a soup tureen. I’m going to try that for sure. Even the tablecloth is beautiful. Hope you get to enjoy your centerpiece for months! Thank you for joining in. pinned
p.s. I’m glad you also keep the plants in their pots. Maybe it’s because I know it will be easier to remove when they die. :/ Not that yours will! I’m sure your thumb is much greener than mine.

  4. Such a pretty centerpiece, Lynn! Great for Spring or a Mom’s Day tablescape. Lucky you for scoring such an amazing soup tureen for free!
