Create a Beautiful Patriotic Summer Floral Door Basket
Create a patriotic summer floral door basket with hydrangeas, white ranunculus, eucalyptus, and gingham ribbon. Easy DIY porch decor for all summer long!
Hello and welcome to the June Design Challenge, formerly the Pinterest Challenge, hosted by my talented and creative friend Cindy of County Road 407. Each month one inspiration photo is chosen and each of the participating bloggers use that photo to recreate something similar, but in their own personal style.
This month is a little different—we’re encouraged to get creative and share something patriotic.

Create a Beautiful Patriotic Summer Floral Door Basket
Looking for a beautiful way to welcome guests this summer? A flower-filled door basket is a charming alternative to a traditional wreath and the perfect way to add seasonal color to your front porch. I decided to give mine a patriotic looks by combining blue and white blooms with lush greenery and classic red and white gingham ribbon for a fresh and inviting display that celebrates summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Why You’ll Love This Summer Floral Door Basket
This easy DIY project comes together quickly and creates a stunning focal point for your front door. Using the classic thriller, spiller, and filler design method ensures your arrangement looks balanced, professional, and full of seasonal charm.
This is the same method I have used for my container garden pot, these flower boxes, and this simple soup tureen centerpiece.
What You’ll Need:
For your convenience, all of the materials are linked at the bottom of this post.
To make your patriotic summer door basket, gather the following supplies:
- A sturdy hanging basket or wall basket
- Floral foam
- Hydrangeas (blue or white for a patriotic base)
- White ranunculus
- Eucalyptus stems
- Floral wire
- Red and white gingham ribbon
- Small American flags (optional for finishing touches)
- Floral wire cutters or scissors
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Prepare Your Basket
Start by securing floral foam inside your basket. I had purchased my basket from Michaels last year and it is no longer available. I have linked some other options at the bottom of this post.
Step 2: Add the Thriller (Hydrangeas)
Begin your design with hydrangeas, which act as the “thriller” and focal point. Place them in the middle of the basket to create fullness and structure. Their large blooms set the tone for the entire arrangement.
Step 3: Add the Filler (Ranunculus)
Next, tuck in white ranunculus around the hydrangeas. I used two stems. These delicate, elegant flowers add softness and texture while filling in gaps.
Step 4: Add the Spiller (Eucalyptus)
Now add eucalyptus stems. I cut two stems apart into six pieces and tucked them around the edges of the basket. Let them naturally drape downward to create a relaxed, garden-inspired feel. This greenery softens the arrangement and ties everything together.
Step 5: Add Patriotic Details to Your Floral Door Basket
Finally, to finish your basket, make a simple bow with red and white gingham ribbon. Using a floral wire, you can attach the ribbon to the front of the wicker basket. You can also tuck in a small American flag or two for an extra festive touch, making this basket perfect for summer holidays and porch decorating.
Styling Your Summer Floral Door Basket
Hang your finished basket on your front door, porch wall, or entryway hook. It pairs beautifully with potted flowers, topiaries, or simple lanterns for a welcoming seasonal porch display.
To complete my front porch, I also added the red and white gingham ribbon and small American flags to my topiaries on either side of my front door.

A Beautiful Summer Welcome
This patriotic summer flower door basket is an easy, elegant way to celebrate the season. The combination of hydrangeas, white ranunculus, and eucalyptus—finished with a red and white gingham ribbon—creates a fresh, classic look that feels both festive and inviting.
And when summer comes to an end, the basket can easily be transformed for another season. Simply remove the flowers, greenery, and ribbon, then refill it with seasonal stems and accents for fall, winter, spring, or your next holiday display. It’s a versatile decorating piece you’ll enjoy year-round.
Using the thriller, spiller, and filler method makes it simple to design a lush arrangement that brings charm and color to your front door all summer long.
