For those who are new here, hello! I’m Lynne and I am so glad you’re here! I am a Connecticut wife, mom, and fourth grade teacher by day, and a self-proclaimed decor enthusiast by night! My Family Thyme is a place where I share my love for all things home and family.
I love all things home…simple DIY projects, crafting, trying new recipes, and decorating on a budget. I would love to connect with you, so please leave me a comment below and say hello!
Decorating for each season is one of my favorite things to do, but I like to keep it simple, with small changes to bring a warm and cozy feel into our home. Come on in!
Last week, I shared my fall entryway, Today I am thrilled to welcome you into my home and share some of my favorite fall decorating ideas in the family room.
Fall Decorating Ideas in the Family Room
Embrace the Colors of the Season
Here in Connecticut, we are fortunate to enjoy the beautiful colors of fall and I always tend to take my fall decorating cues from Mother Nature. What colors come to mind when you think of fall?
Decorating for a new season doesn’t mean redecorating your home. By adding a few simple and inexpensive touches, you can bring the warm and cozy feeling of fall into your home.
This year I added pops of autumn color with shades of orange, blush, and copper. I am a big fan of using pillow covers to change up my decor. These burnt orange pillow covers were a budget-friendly way to add a seasonal pop of color.
Add a Fall Fragrance
For me, decorating for fall isn’t just about a look…it’s about creating a feeling. So, why not make your home smell like fall? Whether is the sweet scent of applesauce cooking in the crockpot, pumpkin bars baking in the oven, or a fall simmer pot on the stovetop, I love all of the scents of fall.
There’s something about the glow of a candle that makes a space feel warm and cozy. The scent of pumpkin is one of my favorites, so naturally, I couldn’t resist this Capri Blue Pumpkin Clove Jar Candle from Anthropologie. This gorgeous candle brings all of the fall feels with it’s beautiful glow and pleasant scent that has a nice balance of spice. What is your favorite fall scent?
Add Warmth With Textures
Soft blankets and pillows add warmth and texture to a space. The mixture of textures, colors and patterns give a cozier feel.
Like in the entryway, I stayed with the blues that I have been slowing adding to our home. I had recently spotted this Threshold Jacobean Square Throw Pillow when shopping at Target. The pretty blue and natural pattern, with the tassels is great for layering. I used one on the bench in my entryway and then a couple in the family room.
Having the same color palette on the first floor helps to the unify the space.
Add Pumpkins (real or faux)
Nothing says fall quite like a pumpkin. Whether you use real or faux, adding a pumpkin here and there is such an easy way to add a touch of fall. They are so easy to find and come in such a variety of colors, shapes, and textures.
I love to craft and each year I try to make a new pumpkin to add to my home. This year I made a gingham painted pumpkin. It was so fun to make!
Bring in Seasonal Flowers
I love fresh flowers! Seasonal flowers are always a great way to bring natural beauty to your space. Whether it’s from your yard, a local farm stand, or a grocery store, flowers are a quick and inexpensive way to add a seasonal touch.
These beauties came from a local farm who sells bouquets at a small shop. When I visited there last week, this combination caught my eye and I couldn’t resist them.

Add a Fall Print or Two
I had fun decorating our mantle this year. I have fallen in love with this William Morris wallpaper and would love to add it to my dining room; however, it is not in my budget right now. Instead, I decided to bring in a bit of the pattern in here by just printing out a digital paper. It was so easy! I purchased it from Etsy for $4 and then had it printed at my local Staples for just $10. Finally, I framed it with this poster frame. I am so happy with how it came out! Isn’t this pattern so pretty?!
The watercolor print is one of my Martha’s Vineyard watercolors. Aren’t the fall colors just gorgeous? I printed it on watercolor paper and framed it with this matted frame from Amazon.
I would love to connect with you and share my Martha’s Vineyard watercolors with you! Just subscribe to my email list and receive free access to my printable library.
Along with the prints, I layered some faux pumpkins, faux seeded eucalyptus, artificial leaf picks, along with a few pine cones and dried hydrangeas.
Have you ever dried hydrangeas? It is easier than you might think! You can read all about how simple it is to dry hydrangeas for fall decorating HERE!
