Summer vacation is quickly approaching!  Now that the kids will be home, are you trying to figure out how you can keep them occupied?  I am so excited get together with a creative and talented group of moms and grandmas to bring you some summer fun ideas for your little ones!

My own children aren’t so little anymore.  That is why I am so thankful that I am an elementary school teacher.  I am surrounded by little ones and enjoy seeing the world through their eyes.  Recently, a friend and I were teaching an after-school craft class.  One of the children’s favorite crafts we made with them was this simple DIY Tic Tac Toe game.  Using a few simple materials, your child can create their own game that they can enjoy throughout the summer months!

When we made this game, I hadn’t planned on sharing it.  I had just snapped a few photos with my phone.

Supplies:

  • large wood slice
  • ruler
  • 10 small rocks
  • acrylic paint
  • paint brushes
  • sharpie marker

*Tip:  If you put a little dish detergent into the paint, it washes out of clothes a little easier!

Directions:

  1. We first gave each child ten small rocks.  These rocks were divided into two groups of five rocks each.  The child decided on 2 different ways to decorate the rocks.  Now it’s time to be creative!  Decide how they should be decorated.  Some children chose to paint bees and ladybugs, while others decided on flowers and butterflies. There’s no right or wrong way to do this!
  2. Using the acrylic paint, have the child paint their rocks to match their idea.  Sometimes you need to let these dry a little between each coat of paint.
  3. While the paint is drying, get a large wood slice.  We were fortunate that my friend’s family was able to cut some for us.  If you don’t have a wood slice, you can purchase a similar one here.
  4. Using a ruler and a sharpie marker, create a Tic Tac Toe Board on the top of the wood slice.
  5. Enjoy your new game!

  1. What a super cute idea! I love that you let the kiddos paint their own rocks. That definitely adds a level of personalization I’m sure they love.

Very fun and unique craft for the kids, Lynne. I bet they had a blast!

  3. Super cute, Lynne! My kids would have so much fun with this, and painted rocks seem like all the rage these days.

  4. I love this, Lynne! My daughter loves playing Tic Tac Toe, and I know she’d really love to play with rocks she painted herself. Great tip about adding dish soap to paint to get it out of clothes easier. I’m definitely going to try that!
