Welcome to My Family Thyme!
Hello and welcome to My Family Thyme! For those who are new here, I am so happy to meet you! I am Lynne – a wife, mom to two adult children, and Kindergarten teacher by day and a home enthusiast by night. My Family Thyme is my creative place where I share fun crafts, simple recipes, budget-friendly home decor ideas, and some educational tips too. I am so happy you are here!
There’s nothing quite like the magic of a classic Christmas home — the soft glow of twinkling lights, the scent of oranges, clove, and cinnamon, and cozy rooms dressed in timeless holiday style. This year, my Classic Christmas Home Tour celebrates the beauty of nostalgia, with elegant decorations, warm textures, and meaningful details that make the season truly special.
The Living Room: Cozy, Elegant, and Full of Holiday Cheer
Our living room captures the heart of traditional Christmas decorating — pops of red, green, and gold with touches of sparkle and sentiment.
Our vintage black dresser is one of my favorite FB Marketplace finds! Above this vintage black dresser is an arched mirror dressed with a simple cedar garland and dark red velvet ribbon for an elegant Christmas look. A petite evergreen tree, a bowl of paperwhites, and a softly glowing candle bring in natural beauty and warmth. Our framed family photos and a sweet snow globe make the space feel both personal and festive.
Plaid adds a festive touch to our Christmas living room, and this red plaid throw draped over the chair is extra special — it was my husband’s baby blanket!
The tree stands tall, waiting to be decorated. My daughter is in school in North Carolina. We are looking forward to Thanksgiving, when she will be home. That is when we will decorate the tree together. In a little over a week, our family Christmas tree will be filled with cherished ornaments collected through the years: glass bulbs, handmade keepsakes, red ribbons, and twinkling white lights.
The coffee table holds a milk glass bowl of greens with ornaments, fresh flowers, and a couple of favorite holiday books for guests to enjoy.
Let’s head into the dining room!
The Dining Room
Nothing brings people together like a beautiful table. For our traditional Christmas dining room, I layered a crisp white and gold tablecloth with a neutral velvet runner. A centerpiece of a mistletoe frosted garland layered with pine cones, red berries, dried oranges, and pine cones creates an elegant focal point, that sits low to encourage conversation. I finished it with candles, mercury glass trees and my DIY ribbon trees.
One of my favorite spots to decorate each year is our side table. This season, I added a mix of greenery and nostalgic touches. A graceful swag of evergreen drapes the mirror and a vibrant red ribbon holding a wreath. Below, our classic wood drop-leaf table is styled with cozy Christmas accents, including my Easy DIY Pinecone Christmas Tree. My great grandfather’s vintage wooden toolbox filled is with festive dishes and linens. I tried to create a display that feels collected and homey for our traditional Christmas home.
Cedar wreaths hang from dark red velvet ribbon on the cabinet doors of the hutch. Their vibrant green adding a beautiful pop of color against the neutral background.
Tip: Keep your color palette cohesive — red, green, gold, and white always feel timeless and inviting.
The Kitchen: Heart of the Home

In true traditional fashion, the kitchen will become the hub of holiday activity. In a couple of weeks, scents of my grandmother’s warm, buttery Scottish shortbread will fill the air as it bakes in the oven. Simple touches — a festive classic plaid tablecloth, wreaths on cabinet doors with the same dark red velvet ribbon, and a rosemary plant, shaped as a Christmas tree — make our everyday moments feel magical.
Tip: Use painter’s tape to hang wreaths. Use the tape to hold ribbon on the back of cabinet doors. It is easy to remove and leaves no residue.
A tray on the counter, filled with seasonal signs, a DIY ribbon tree, and a DIY Holiday Jar Floating Candles with Boxwood and Cranberries all add a cheerful touch. Fresh cedar garland and a plaid tablecloth bring warmth and a seasonal touch to the space.
Of course, we love the scents of the season! We especially enjoy the scent of this Simple Holiday Simmer Pot recipe.
