How to Stencil an Outdoor Doormat

How to Create a Customized Stencil in Cricut
- First, in Cricut Design Space, choose your text to create your message. I used the font, Futura. Don’t forget to attach your letters to maintain the correct spacing!
- Use Cricut stencil vinyl on your cutting mat.
- Cut your vinyl.
- Once all of the cutting is done, you need to weed your vinyl. This means you need to use your weeding tool to remove the stencil vinyl lettering from the vinyl, so that you just have the stencil left.
How to Stencil an Outdoor Doormat
- First, measure your stencil and your doormat. Position your stencil to your liking.
- Once you are happy with where you have your stencil placed, use painter’s to secure the stencil to your coir doormat. The stencil has a little adhesive, but doesn’t really stick to the coir mat. It is best to use the painter’s tape to secure it into place.
- Now it’s time to stencil! Pour some paint in a paper plate. I used some leftover Fusion Mineral Paint, in the color Ash. It’s a rich, dark gray, almost black color.
- Using your brush, dab the paint into the letters. I first used a sponge stenciling brush, but felt like the paint wasn’t getting into the fibers of the coir doormat. I switched to a small paint brush. The lettering took about 4 coats of paint, with a little time to dry between coats.
- When the paint is dry, carefully peel back the stencil to reveal the lettering.
- Following the directions on the spray paint, generously spray the lettering with a clear, durable topcoat spray paint. This will ensure that your doormat will stand up to foot traffic.
