I love love finding treasures at thrift stores. They remind me of my grandparents’ home. It was a place of comfort that became my mom’s home. I recently had to sell it, but the silver lining is that one of my dearest friends purchased it and I am able to still have a connection to it. While cleaning it out, I came across many old treasures, including this chair. It had belonged to my grandfather and was a part of so many good memories.

The Chair

This classic wingchair was made by the Hitchcock Chair Company, here in Connecticut. It is solid and well made, but unfortunately, the fabric is worn, dated, and faded. I have seen similar chairs at my local thrift shop, but this one has a sentimental value to me. I knew that I wanted to keep this chair and use it in my home, but wasn’t sure how to update it.

How to Update an Old Chair

Reupholstering the chair was out of my budget. I had researched the idea of painting the fabric, but was so afraid of ruining the chair. A slipcover would be the perfect solution, but not just any slipcover. I chose this Stretch Piqué One Piece Wing Chair Slipcover in navy.   I am an avid review reader and this slipcover was rated 4.8 out of 5.  For less than $70 on the SureFit website, I had to give it a try!  The slipcover shipped quickly and arrived in just a few days. As soon as I took it out of the package, I saw how well made it was. The fabric is both soft and stretchy, and it fit the shape of the wing chair beautifully.

The slipcover arrived with clear, step by step instructions. It was so easy to put on the chair that you can cover a piece in just a few minutes. My husband offered to help me, but I had surprised him by having it finished before he came into the room. It did require some tucking and smoothing, but before long, we were both happy with the results.

  2. Wow! What an update! Love the blue. The fabric looks soft, too! Pinned 🙂
