Creating a simple neutral summer vignette with real and faux greenery for a console table, mantle, or shelf.

Hello! Welcome to the May Pinterest Challenge!

What is the Pinterest Challenge?

This Pinterest Challenge is hosted by talented friend Cindy of CountyRoad407.com. Each month one inspiration photo is chosen and each of the participating bloggers use that photo to recreate something similar, but in their own personal style.

This month is all about styling a summer console table, mantle, or shelf.

If you are visiting from my friend Renee’s blog, Peacock Ridge Farm, welcome! I am so glad you’re here! Don’t you just love Renee’s French country style and her creative decorating ideas?

Our Inspiration

Our beautiful inspiration photo comes from Michelle of The Painted Hinge. I just love the layered look Michelle had created, using a combination of greenery, herbs, and flowers.

Elements from Michelle’s Photo

  • Greenery
  • Mix of textures
  • Variety of Heights

Inspired by Michelle’s photo, I shopped my home, focusing on greenery, textures, and height to create a neutral summer vignette. Best of all, I didn’t purchase a thing!

My Neutral Summer Vignette

This antique cabinet was a recent addition to our living room. I originally bought it for our family room, but it didn’t fit the space well. We moved it into the living room and are using it for dishes, as well as a liquor cabinet. I am still not sure if I will paint it or refinish it. What do you think?

To create my neutral summer vignette, I first added my DIY topiary for some texture and height. I had used one of my Dry Brush Painted Flower Pots for the topiary. This is similar to the pots that Michelle used in the inspiration photo.

Next, I added a faux boxwood ball in a small pot that I had on my mantle, a larger plant in a mercury glass planter, and a small white kalanchoe plant from Trader Joe’s that was on my kitchen window sill.

To me, collected shells are a sign of summer, so I added a few to my vignette. I love the beautiful textures.

A couple of books and a simple candle complete the table top.

My friend, Anne Marie, had gifted me this large vase that had belonged to her aunt. Isn’t it beautiful? I placed it next to the cabinet and added a few faux eucalyptus stems for some more greenery.

  3. That is one beautiful cabinet. Love the rich deep color and your interpretation on top is perfect for it. And of course not spending a dime is the best thing ever! I love it when that happens. Thank you for joining in. pinned

  4. What a pretty vintage cabinet, Lynne! It’s beautiful as is, but would be lovely painted white, too. Great storage! Your subtly colored vignette is so pretty and fresh for summer.

  8. That antique cabinet is gorgeous Lynne! I love that you kept your vignette fairly simple but still managed to include many of the elements!

  9. I can’t think of a better spot for your summer vignette than on top of this pretty cabinet! I really like the patina of the finish, but you’ll have to decide how it will look painted. Either way have fun with it!

  10. Lynne, I love your new cabinet! It’s beautiful as is but I’m sure up close it needs some TLC as any old lady would! (Including myself!) ☺️ I love how you’ve brought in the jar from your friend’s aunt and the cheese dome. Beautiful!!!

Enjoy your pretty vignette and your new antique,
    Hugs,
    Barb ☺️
    Ps Pinned as always!

  11. Lynne, your cabinet is lovely. What a wonderful find. You’ve styled it beautifully. I love your combination of items. Normally, I’m all in favor of painting such pieces. Yours looks like a well-made piece that doesn’t have the typical reddish finish. If it is truly an antique or close to it, I would leave it as is. Live with it and see how you feel in several months.
