Do you have a room that everyone gathers in? On most days, you can find me and my family in here in our family room. This is the place where we really live, so I decided to keep the Christmas decor in here fun, festive, and family friendly.

To begin decorating this room, I started with the mantle. It really is more of a shelf than a mantle, but for now, it works for us. Since our mantle is not very deep, decorating this space can be a bit of a challenge. I kept it simple with a festive diy Christmas garland.

A Christmas garland adds seasonal color and a combination of beautiful textures.

Materials:

  • 9 foot artificial evergreen garland (I purchased mine at Michael’s.)
  • ribbon
  • floral wire
  • wire cutters
  • decorations (ornaments, pine cones, and seasonal picks)

Directions:

  • Fold the garland in half and twist to create a garland that is 4 1/2 feet long, but full.
  • Pull out the branches to fluff the garland and make it fuller.
  • Add ribbon. I used coordinating ribbons, in different widths to add a pop of color.
  • Use floral ribbon to attach the ribbon to the garland by gathering and twisting.  Trim excess wire with the wire cutters and fold any sharp edges in.
  • Decorate with mini ornaments, pine cones, and seasonal picks.

Keeping with the festive colors from the mantle, I decorated the rest of the room with pops of red, white, and green.

Throughout the room, I added some fresh holly and berries, clipped from bushes in my yard.  I love using fresh greenery in my decor.  If you don’t have bushes in your yard, you can ask your local nursery or Home Depot for any free clippings they may have.

I decorated a small colorful tree with ornaments that my children, Chris and Elisabeth, made throughout their childhood. This cute, 3 foot Christmas tree is topped with a festive bow made from ribbon that coordinates with the mantle garland.

I love pillows. They make a space so warm and inviting.  Inexpensive seasonal pillow covers from Amazon bring some holiday cheer to our seating area.  It is so easy to change a look by just changing out the pillow covers. Plus, they are so affordable and easy to store.

This cozy chenille throw from Home Goods will get a lot of use as we watch our favorite Christmas movies.  Soft, warm blankets are must during Connecticut winters, so I have linked a similar one here for you.
