What is a simmer pot?

A simmer pot is also known as stovetop potpourri. It is a combination of fruit, herbs, and spices that is simmered in water. The scented water evaporates and fills your home with its fragrance.

You can use a mini crockpot, like a Crockpot™ Little Dipper, or any stovetop pot. Here, I used my LeCruset dutch oven.

What can I simmer on stove for fall smell?

When people think of fall, many think of pumpkin. While I do enjoy pumpkin spice, this combination of apples, oranges, cinnamon, and cloves creates a fragrance that smells like apple pie, with a little hint of citrus…a perfect scent for fall.

How to Make a Simple Fall Simmer Pot

Begin with an apple, an orange, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves. Slice the apple and orange, and  put the slices into your pot.

Add 3 cinnamon sticks and a teaspoon of whole cloves.

Add water to the pot. (I did add some more after I took these pictures, so that the cinnamon sticks and fruit slices were completely covered.)

Then just let the combination simmer on a low setting to create an amazing aroma in your home, naturally.

Check on your simmer pot regularly and add more water, if necessary.

What do you do with a simmer pot after cooking?

It is possible to reuse a simmer pot a second time. To reuse, drain water from the simmer pot ingredients. After the ingredients are drained and have cooled, store them in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, depending on what ingredients you used.

To reuse, add ingredients and fresh water to your pot.

What other ingredients can I use for a simmer pot?

Some popular simmer pot ingredients are cranberries, oranges, apples, lemons, limes, vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, mint leaves, and rosemary. What combinations might you try?
