Welcome! I am so glad you’re here for week 3 of the $100 Room Challenge, hosted by Erin from Lemon’s, Lavender, and Laundry. You may have seen Erin talk about this challenge on the Rachael Ray Show. which happens twice a year, in January and September. Bloggers have one month to completely transform a space with a budget of $100. I love this challenge because of all of the creative inspiration you will find here. I am updating my dark, boring foyer into a space with bright welcoming space with character and style. If you are following my progress on Instagram or Facebook, you have seen a glimpse of some of my progress.

As a part of the $100 Room Challenge, my foyer received a board and batten wall. This simple DIY project made a large impact in a small space!  Now, I am adding some beautiful, personalized artwork for a very low cost!

Did you know you can create a watercolor using any image from your phone with an app? That’s right!  No artistic skill needed. I learned about it a few years ago when reading my friend, KariAnne’s blogpost from Thistlewood Farms. I recently stumbled across this idea again while scrolling Pinterest and my wheels started turning.

Almost every summer, Andy, Chris, Elisabeth, and I visit Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the coast of Cape Cod. It is our favorite vacation spot and a place that represents so many wonderful family memories. While there, I always snap photos of the gorgeous landscape and scenic views.  I was recently scrolling through the thousands of pictures on my phone and found many from our last few trips.  Why not turn some into watercolors that would decorate our walls?

While I love the original pictures, I also love the soft, muted look of these watercolors. I am happy to share these Martha’s Vineyard Watercolors with you! If you would like these printables for yourself, you can click here to subscribe to my email list and get access to your free download. If you would like to make some of your own, just follow these simple steps:

How to Create a Watercolor Using Your Phone

  1. Downloaded the Waterlogue app.  It is currently $4.99 in the app store.
  2. Tap on the photo icon on the left to upload your photo.
  3. Choose the filter you would like.
  4. Keep scrolling over to the right to adjust the size and lighting.  You can add a border here too!
  5. When you’re happy with your picture, hit the icon on the right to save it or share it.

I emailed these to myself, resized them using PicMonkey, printed them on watercolor paper, and popped them into some frames. So easy!

I had some old frames that I was planning to spray paint to save money for this $100 Room Challenge, but it has been so cold here in Connecticut that spray painting is not currently an option. Instead, I picked up these frames from Michael’s Crafts. They were on sale…buy one and get two free and I was able to use a teacher discount as well. Three matted frames cost about $20. I think it was a great deal. It did put a little dent into my $100 budget for this space, but I think they were well worth it.

When you enter our home now and are greeted with these watercolor prints, it truly feels like home. Now, these precious memories are preserved as artwork on our foyer walls.

  2. Your watercolor art looks fabulous over your board and batten wall. I haven’t used Waterlogue in a long time and am glad that you reminded me of it. It’s not on my phone now, so I might have to buy it again, but it is well worth the money. When I used to have it I did several pictures of Sherman and one of me and Sherman that I used to have hanging in my classroom. The kids loved it and most thought it was a real painting. You are super to offer your beautiful Martha’s Vineyard prints to your subscribers. Very pretty!
