Recipe type: bread
Serves: 1 loaf
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tespoon salt
  • 1 teapoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Sift the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Using your hands, aerate the mixture by scooping up handfuls and drop it back into the bowl.
  4. Begin adding buttermilk until you have a soft dough.
  5. You need to work quickly as the buttermilk and baking soda begin to react.
  6. Knead the dough lightly.
  7. Do not over knead as the dough will become tough, while not enough will not allow it to rise properly.
  8. Form a round loaf as thick as your fist.
  9. Place the loaf on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  10. Cut an x in the top of the loaf.
  11. Bake near the top of the oven for 30-45 minutes, keeping an eye for when it begins to brown.
  12. After removing the loaf from the oven, wrap it immediately in a clean tea towel.
