Welcome to the October Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop hosted by  My Pinterventures! I am so excited to get together with a group of blogging buddies to not just collect pins, but to create something we’ve pinned to our Pinterest boards. In the past, I have made these amazing PF Chang’s Chicken Lettuce Wraps from Damn Delicious and this decadent Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pizza . Today, I am sharing a craft that is perfect for fall decorating.

My Pinterest Inspiration

I love decorating for fall and lately, I am obsessed with all things buffalo plaid.  From napkins to ribbon to fashion, I am loving these black and white checks.

I had pinned this blog post for painting Buffalo Check Pumpkins from Positively Splendid at the end of September and was so excited to bring this project to life!

Materials:

  • artificial pumpkins
  • DecoArt acrylic craft paint in warm white, slate grey, and lamp black
  • brushes

I began with a couple of artificial pumpkins from Michael’s.  These pumpkins were already off-white in color. I thought that I would save a step in not having to paint them and it would make this project go a little quicker.

Sadly, my plan did not work.  To be honest with you, this is my second attempt at this project.  I had originally painted checks on the off-white pumpkins using grey and black chalk paint; however, the perfectionist in me was not happy with the results.  The different paint finishes just didn’t look right.

The best thing about these projects is that I can just repaint and start over again!  For my second attempt, these pumpkins got a coat of my favorite Deco Art’s acrylic craft paint in Warm White. For the checks I used Deco Art’s Slate Grey and the overlaps got a coat of Lamp Black.  This paint is simple to work with, cleans up easily, and is inexpensive.

Process:

After giving the pumpkins a base coat of Warm White, I started out by painting horizontal stripes with the grey paint, spacing them out evenly. You can use a pencil to plan the width and keep your stripes evenly spaced, and a consistent width. Similarly plan out your vertical stripes and paint them in.

Once all of the horizontal and vertical stripes are dry, fill in the overlapping areas with the black paint.

That’s it! In less than an hour, these buffalo plaid pumpkins were complete and ready to add to my fall decor! So simple and so pretty! I am thinking they will look great on my porch, mixed with pumpkins and mums (if it ever stops raining here in CT!)

I hope you give this seasonal craft a try!
