Vintage-Looking Tool Caddy

Before:

When I was recently in Goodwill, this little unfinished wood tool caddy caught my eye. For only $2, it found its way into my cart.

What could I do with it?  I had so many ideas… Perhaps I could use it in my classroom? Maybe it could hold paint brushes in my craft room?  After a little thought, I decided that with a weathered wood finish, this would be a perfect piece to use in my kitchen.

To Create a Weathered Wood Finish:

  • I first stained the entire piece.  I used the stain that I had on hand, Minwax Red Mahogany, and let it dry completely.

  • Next, I created an easy paint wash.  In an old mason jar, I mixed equal parts of DecoArt Americana paint in Grey Sky and Whitewash.  Then I added the same amount of water to create a wash.

  • Using a paint brush, I brushed the wash on and then wiped it off with a paper towel, going with the grain of the wood.

  •  Once it is dry, you can sand with a fine grain paper to create a more rustic appearance.

So easy and so pretty!
