I love hanging out in our family room. It is one of my favorite rooms, and the room that sold me on our house so many years ago. While I love its charm, I find parts of it to be such a challenge to decorate.
I am talking about decorating that awkward place above our television. I haven’t been happy with the blank space around our TV for quite some time. I have been brainstorming, searching Pinterest for ideas, and shopping my house.
Mid-Modern Family re-run, I had an idea.
When I have an idea, I kind of get a one-track mind.
In the basement, I found an old shelf that was significantly larger than the one that had previously been there. Out comes my favorite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
I began my cleaning up the shelf and giving it two coats of this gorgeous color, French Linen. After it was completely dry, I sealed it with clear wax, using a waxing brush, and then buffed it with one of my husband’s old t-shirts.
Next came the distressing. I applied dark wax, using a brush, to areas and edges that would naturally show age.
Once the shelf was hung, it was time to accessorize it for the summer. I shopped my home for some milkglass and a turquoise glass bottle. I added a collection of shells and seaglass from our last family vacation. I found a candle for height and a framed print from our favorite vacation place, the charming island of Martha’s Vineyard. It’s beginning to feel like summer.
I also added a canvas print of one of my husband’s favorite summertime pictures of our children. So simple and casual.
Since the shelf is horizontal, I had found a vertical wall hanging at Hobby Lobby to complement the shelf. With a 40% coupon, it was an affordable addition to our family room.
I am still undecided if I should add more, or just leave it for now. How do you decorate that awkward area around your TV? I would love to hear your ideas!
